Deadline Extended For Abuse Victims

The Herald, Friday 7th May 2010

Survivors of childhood sexual abuse have been given extra time to apply to a new pilot scheme which will give them a chance to have their stories officially acknowledged and recorded.

The Time to Be Heard forum was set-up by the Scottish Government to assess the value of the approach to dealing with historical abuse cases. It is offering 100 former residents of homes run by the Charity Quarriers the chance to take part in a pilot scheme under which their accounts will be heard by a panel of three commissioners.

A spokesman for the government said there had been more than 150 enquiries from former Quarriers residents about the scheme, with 92 people having applied to take part. Applications were to have closed on April 30, however the deadline for applications has now been extended to May 31.

A government spokeswoman said that it had not yet been decided what would happen if applications exceeded 100, adding that such a decision would be up to the commission itself.

Martin Henry, of the sexual abuse prevention campaign Stop it Now said the scheme was a vital step in addressing historical abuse, adding “The Scottish Government should be congratulated on this pilot”.

A spokesman for the charity Former Boys and Girls Abused of Quarriers Homes said:

“FBGA would like to see all former residents from all past care institutions eventually participate in a similar process”.
