GUILTY! Fourth paedophile from Quarriers to be convicted

Gazette Group, 24/03/2004

A ONE-LEGGED man has become the FOURTH paedophile to be convicted following a 30-year reign of sexual terror at Quarriers.

Frail Alexander Wilson, 61, now faces years in jail when he is sentenced for a catalogue of abuse against eight girls.

He will now join his brother-in-law John Porteous, 70, already serving eight years for sex offences at the Quarriers Village, Bridge of Weir, where they both worked as house parents.

Wilson's victims were sexually molested over a 19-year period from the mid-1960s.

The former plumber and houseparent lived with his late wife Jan at one of the home's 30 cottages housing 500 unwanted children.

He was found guilty unanimously at the High Court in Glasgow of 15 charges of molesting the children and showed no emotion as he was remanded in custody to await sentence.

Some of his victims, now adults, sat weeping as the jury returned its verdict before walking quietly from court and hugging two policewomen who investigated the case and gave evidence for the Crown.

Temporary Judge David Burns, QC, placed Wilson on the Sex Offenders' Register and called for a risk assessment as to his possible future danger to the public.

Wilson follows three other Quarriers house parents to prison, all of whom were convicted of serious sexual abuse charges. As well as Porteous, Samuel McBrearty, 72, was jailed for 12 years in 2001 for repeatedly raping two girls and indecently assaulting them and a third girl.

The vile offences happened between 1961 and 1968 when the girl were just eight, 10 and 11. Senior social worker McBrearty is currently appealing his conviction.

Joseph Nicholson, 74, nicknamed Uncle Joe was jailed for two years for sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl 35 years ago.

After Wilson's conviction it was revealed that there are another three ex-Quarriers' employees, all men, being investigated over sexual abuse allegations and a former woman employee over allegations of physical abuse.
