Letter from Nick Raynsford MP to David Whelan 24/10/03
24 October 2003 Dear Mr Whelan Further to your discussions with my caseworker and subsequent documentation, I can confirm that I have raised this matter with the BBC. With regard to your correspondence with the Scottish Prison Service, I have read through the response you received from Tom Fox, Head of Communications. Whilst I appreciate your concerns that Mr Porteous was allowed to be filmed and interviewed in prison, my understanding is that this is in accordance with current practices. Individuals do have the right to appeal and to publicise their case through the media. From the documentation you have provided I do have concerns with the manner in which the BBC handled the reporting of this case especially when they have admitted that they omitted key quotes from your sister, which were in support of you. I have therefore written on your behalf to the BBC. I am sorry that you have been forced to re-live events that are obviously painful to you and hope my intervention will help to secure the explanation from the BBC, which you seek. Yours sincerely Nick Raynsford MP |
