Secrets or Lies - the connections John Porteous - Former Chair Former Boys and Girls Association (FBGA) Former Chairman, Quarriers Village Council Helen Porteous - Former Treasurer FBGA Administered cottage 8 Helen Porteous and her daughter Heather ran drama classes in Quarriers village and members of the drama group were used in the reconstructions in Secrets or Lies. Porteous family members also rented property from Quarriers within the village. Some of which were used for filming the reconstructions in Secrets or lies, as were Cottage 8 and other locations in the village owned by Quarriers. BBC Scotland connections - The 1984 book "The Village" by Anna Magnusson, brought together Anna Magnusson, Porteous, Mortimer, Dunbar the FBGA and others. Anna Magnusson is a BBC Scotland Producer and the historian of Quarriers. Colin Adams - Adams was responsible for Public Relations for Quarriers and, with Anna Magnusson, commissioned a BBC radio programme on Quarriers in December 2005. The Chief Executive of Quarriers contacted David Whelan as Colin Adams had been commissioned by BBC Radio Scotland to do a program on Quarriers Homes and the abuse issues. Colin Adams subsquently interviewed David Whelan . Unbeknown to David Whelan at the time Anna Magnusson was the producer of the programme A Rock and a Hard Place. Joseph Mortimer and Bill Dunbar, both former directors of Quarriers Homes and former members of Quarriers village council, were involved in Secrets or Lies as was Mrs Dunbar who was involved in the BBC programme A Passion for Churches. Agnes Allison - Former Quarriers Homes child and member of the FBGA: benefits included further education funding and use of Quarriers property for business interests. Agnes did not reside in any of the cottages managed by the Porteouses. Also involved in the BBC programme A Passion for Churches. David Whelan says it is inaccurrate of Agnes Allison to claim that she had any connections with him while in Quarriers Homes. Pearl Mailey, previously Pearl Pettigrew, and nee Pearl Allison - Former Quarriers Homes child and former vice-chair of the FBGA; former Quarriers Homes employee. She worked with Mrs Porteous and her ex-husband Robert Pettigrew was also an employee of Quarriers Homes in the past. David Whelan disputes her claim that they were ever friends Michael Henderson - Former Quarriers Homes child who lived in the Porteous cottage and member of the FBGA; former Quarriers Homes employee who worked with Mrs Porteous and became a social worker supported by the Porteouses. Informed others that he was aware John Porteous had abused children in his care. Alan Henderson - Former Quarriers Homes child who lived in the Porteous cottage and member of the FBGA. Henderson employed Porteous family members, including John Porteous, in his childrens's school uniform and kilt shop in Bridge of Weir up to and after the conviction of John Porteous. Informed others that he was aware John Porteous had abused children in his care. Irene Whelan - Former Quarriers Homes child who lived briefly in the Porteous cottage with her brother. Also a member of the FBGA. Informed the police about sexual and physical abuse matters concerning John Porteous and other issues pertaining to Quarriers Homes. David Whelan was a witness at her request when she gave her police statement. Irene Whelan was in the care of the Porteous household for five weeks only with her brother David in all her time in Quarriers Homes. In April 1971 she was removed from Quarriers Homes after a serious physical assault on her by John Porteous which she reported to Mr J Mortimer at the time. Carol Daldry - Former Quarriers Homes child who lived in the Porteous cottage and member of the FBGA. Previously obtained distress funding as claimed by her sister from the association while Mr and Mrs Porteous were in charge. Billy O'Hara - Former Quarriers Homes child and member of the FBGA. Had previously discussed the accussations against John Porteous at an FBGA dinner dance. Was not in Quarriers Homes at the time some of the abuse took place. |
